Discovery+ Documents the Discovery of a 3,000-Year-Old Lost City in Egypt

A new Egyptian discovery by Dr. Zahi Hawass has revealed an ancient mystery that remained unsolved for centuries. The incredible findings of Dr. Zahi Hawass and his team will air in an all-new special coming to discovery+.

April 09, 2021

Egyptologist Dr. Zahi Hawass has spent his career uncovering the secrets that lie beneath Egypt. Now, Dr. Hawass and discovery+ are taking viewers behind the scenes of one of Egypt’s most incredible discoveries.

A mystery that has remained unsolved for thousands of years is no more. The Rise of Aten, an ancient Egyptian city in Luxor that was lost under the sands 3,000 years ago, has been discovered by archaeologist Dr. Zahi Hawass and his team. The once lost city dates back to the reign of Amenhotep III and continued to be used by Tutankhamun and Ay. With exclusive filming and broadcasting access, the upcoming discovery+ special will feature the findings of this latest expedition, including artifacts, treasures and in-depth analysis of this new city.

“Thanks to the support of discovery+ I can now concentrate all my efforts into this unique excavation, and one of the biggest discoveries of my career,” said Dr. Hawass.

But this isn’t the first major Egyptian mystery explored by Discovery. Dr. Zahi Hawass and the network’s previous ventures include:

1. EXPEDITION UNKNOWN: EGYPT LIVE

In April 2019, Discovery followed Dr. Hawass and his team as they uncovered a 2,500-year-old mummy of a high priest for the first time ever on live television. The special EXPEDITION UNKNOWN: EGYPT LIVE also revealed two other mummies and various ancient antiquities, including a mysterious wax head

2. VALLEY OF THE KINGS: THE LOST TOMBS

The network also followed Dr. Hawass and his team on the biggest Egyptian excavation ever attempted in the Western Valley of the Kings, a burial site in Egypt where some of the most powerful Pharaohs were once buried. The two-hour special is now streaming on discovery+.

If you love ancient mysteries, this is something you won’t want to miss. The new special will stream exclusively on discovery+. In the meantime, viewers can explore more Egyptian mysteries by streaming VALLEY OF THE KINGS: THE LOST TOMBS on discovery+.
