For the first 75 days of 2015, Costa Rica has relied completely on renewable energy sources, the state-run power supplier Costa Rican Electricity Institute announced.

The country has mother nature to thank: Costa Rica's hydropower plants have been in overdrive all year thanks to higher-than-average rainfall throughout the Central American nation. Costa Rica also utilizes solar, wind and geothermal power.

Authorities are also gearing up for possible drought conditions that could render hydropower plants inoperable. Last year, legislators approved a $958 million geothermal project that is not contingent upon weather conditions to say operable. The three geothermal plants will utilize Costa Rica's abundant volcanic resources to power the nation.

An international leader in the quest for clean power, Costa Rica plans to be carbon neutral by 2021.
