This 5-Million-Degree Plasma Cyclone Ripped Across the Sun for 40 Hours

NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory spotted a breathtaking mass of plasma that spent a staggering 40 hours tearing across the Sun earlier this month. "It was stretched and pulled back and forth by powerful magnetic forces but not ripped apart in this sequence," the agency explains on its website.

The cyclone reportedly had a height of over 40,000 miles; its ionized particles were approximately 5 million degrees Fahrenheit:
