Dawn Enters Science Orbit
NASA/JPL-Caltech

After a brief scare, NASA'S Dawn spacecraft has settled into its first science orbit around dwarf planet Ceres. NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory reports that the spacecraft briefly entered safe mode after a command sequence was delayed, but mission controllers were successful in quickly returning the spacecraft to "normal operating mode".

During this orbit, Dawn will undertake an "intensive science campaign" aimed at mapping the dwarf planet's topography. Dawn will pay particular attention to bright spots on the surface that astronomers suspect may be cryptovolcanoes.

Upon its arrival at Ceres in early March, Dawn became the first spacecraft to study a dwarf planet at close range. Dawn will eventually become a permanent satellite of Ceres.
