Fresh Crater Near Sirenum Fossae Region of Mars
NASA/JPL/University of Arizona

NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter snapped this photo of a kilometer-wide impact crater in the Sirenum Fossae region of Mars earlier this year. Based on the crater's well-preserved ejecta and sharp rim, astronomers know that it is relatively new, and are keeping on eye on the crater to observe how it will change over time. Click here to learn more about the crater from NASA.

Humankind's missions to space have been sending treasure troves of data back to Earth: recent discoveries include unexpected blue splotches, a possible ancient supervolcano and curious mineral veins.
