Layers and Dark Dunes on the Surface of Mars
NASA/JPL-Caltech/University of Arizona

NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter captured this photograph of a large depression on the Martian surface. The dune on the lefthand side of the photograph reveals various subterranean bands overlain by dark sand. To the right, the Orbiter also captured an adjacent field of cones.

The photo was captured on January 5 of this year by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter's High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment camera, which provides detailed photographs of the Red Planet's surface. Astronomers hope to use the high resolution of this photograph to identify the individual layers.
