Plunge Through Earth’s Atmosphere — From The Vantage Point of a Falling Rocket

American aerospace contractor SpaceX mounted a camera on one of its Falcon 9 rockets, and it captured spectacular footage as it plunged back down to Earth.

The re-entry process is surprisingly smooth: the rocket gracefully tumbles back toward Earth on a celestial tilt-a-whirl. The rest of the flight wasn't quite as picturesque, however: RT reports that the rocket burned up during atmospheric re-entry.

The Falcon 9 spacecraft is a two-stage rocket designed by SpaceX to deliver its companion Dragon spacecraft to orbit. According to its official website, Falcon 9 was the first rocket completely developed in the 21st century, and its May 2012 Dragon delivery marked the first time that a commercial spacecraft successfully rendezvoused with another another spacecraft.
