Prepare yourselves, fellow black coffee lovers, because we're about to go on a journey of self-discovery.

New research from Austria's Innsbruck University examined the food tastes and personalities of nearly 1,000 Americans, finding a positive relationship between bitter taste preferences and psychopathy, narcissism and sadism.

Researchers assessed food preferences by asking study participants to rank their affinity for several dozen sweet, sour, salty and bitter foods and drinks -- in addition to coffee, the bitter category was rounded out by celery, radishes, beer and tonic water.

Those preferences were then cross-referenced with four different personality inventories that investigated issues of aggression, hostility and narcissism.

"The results of both studies confirmed the hypothesis that bitter taste preferences are positively associated with malevolent personality traits, with the most robust relation to everyday sadism and psychopathy," Innsbruck researchers write.

Despite that "robust relation," the study authors do concede that "research relating what people like to eat to their personality is still in its early stages."

The study, 'Individual differences in bitter taste preferences are associated with antisocial personality traits,' will be published in the journal Appetite.
