Learn more about driverless cars:

A police officer making a traffic stop yesterday found himself in an odd situation: The car that he pulled over had no driver.

Traffic had started to back up behind the vehicle in question, which was traveling at speed of 24mph in a 35mph zone, according to a blog post from the police department.

As it turns out, the vehicle in question was part of of Google's Self-Driving Car Project, and the Mountain View, California officer was promptly able to make contact with the its operators:

After speaking with the operators to "learn more about how the car was choosing speeds," the officer ultimately determined that the car was well within its rights to be traveling at a lower speed.

In a social media post, Google explains that company caps the speed of the prototype vehicles at 25mph for safety reasons. "We want them to feel friendly and approachable, rather than zooming scarily through neighborhood streets," the company writes.

Despite having travelled 1.2 million miles since the project's inception, Google's fleet of autonomous vehicles has reportedly never received a traffic citation.
