Splash, Crash and Bash Your Way Through NASA Langley’s History

Did you know that NASA has a test facility dedicated exclusively to simulating crash landings? Located at NASA's Langley Research Center in Hampton, Va., the Landing and Impact Research Facility (LandIR) was first built in 1963 to simulate moon landings.

In the last 50 years, the facility has also played host to simulated crash landings of airplanes and helicopters, drop tests for various spacecraft and water splashdowns, many of which have produced some seriously spectacular footage.

LandIR staff recently compiled a video of some of the facility's most noteworthy crashes and splashes:
