Indian officials are closer than ever to realizing plans for a 750-megawatt solar power plant, the world's largest by capacity.

Over the weekend, Energy Minister Rajendra Shukla said that a 1,500-hectare plant is slated to start harvesting solar energy in the spring of 2017. It will be located in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh.

First announced in February of this year, the plant is expected to have the lowest production cost of any solar project in India.

The project will dethrone California's Ivanpah Solar Power Facility as the world's largest solar power project, The Economic Times reports. Ivanpah has a gross capacity of 392 megawatts.

Shukla's announcement comes on the heels of news that India's Cochin International Airport has become the world's first solar-powered airport.
