A fully-grown male cougar perched atop a 35-foot utility pole gave residents of Lucerne Valley, California quite a shock earlier this week.

According to the Victorville Daily Press, the animal was driven up the utility pole on Tuesday evening by a group of passing schoolchildren that were "yelling with excitement" upon seeing the creature near their bus.

Once at the top, the cougar didn't make friends with the pole's regulars: witness reported that crows appeared to be cawing at and teasing the feline interloper.

"It was like the one crow was saying, 'Hey, you're not a crow' to the mountain lion," a passerby told the newspaper.

The cougar remained atop the pole throughout the evening, eventually slipping back into the wild during the overnight hours.
