Officials are on the hunt for a seal or sea lion that was abducted from California's Dockweiler State Beach early Sunday morning.

Police received a tip from a resident who spotted four individuals throwing garbage and cinder blocks at a pair of sea lions or seals on the beach around 3 a.m. Per federal law, the harassment, killing or capture of sea lions is prohibited.

The group wrapped one of the animals in a blanket and loaded it into a dark-colored Honda Civic with a license plate ending in 56. The second animal, which was confirmed to be a sea lion, was located unharmed on a nearby bike path.

Because sea lions are a federally protected species, the investigation is being handled by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and City of Los Angeles Animal Cruelty Task Force.
