The Tasmanian swift parrot could be extinct in 16 years, a new study out of Australian National University reveals. Due to habitat destruction throughout Tasmania, the parrots are falling victim to predators at astronomical rates; the population is expected to halve in four year's time.

"Swift parrots are in far worse trouble than anybody previously thought. Everyone, including foresters, environmentalists and members of the public will be severely affected if they go extinct," remarked Professor Heinsohn from the ANU Fenner School of Environment and Society.

Researchers call current population management techniques "inadequate" and are calling for a moratorium on tree logging. Ironically, the swift parrot plays a major role in pollination of blue and black gum trees, a resource essential to the logging industry.
