Into Solemn Waters
August 7 -- Searchers today prepared to sail into the Philippine Sea for the second time this summer, hoping within the week to find the sunken cruiser USS Indianapolis, torpedoed during the closing days of World War II in the U.S. Navy's worst wartime disaster.

Fifty-Five Years Later
August 9 -- Less than three weeks before the end of World War II, the heavy cruiser Indianapolis left this port to prepare for the invasion of Japan. She never saw land again. Now, 55 years later, four crew mates from Indy's final voyage have returned to the Pacific to join deep-sea explorers as they look for the wreck of their ship.

Back at Sea
August 11 -- Aboard a search vessel skirting a tropical storm, we feel the power of the Pacific. But at least we're finally at sea, sailing toward the waters where Indianapolis vanished more than half a century ago.

Search Interrupted
August 15 -- Shortly after midnight, as the ROV's handlers began their final check, a relay in the vehicle's 440-volt power supply just fried out. Result: a four-day delay and unexpected side trip to the archipelago of Palau for repairs.

Dive Time
August 17 -- Finally, after weeks of waiting, the ROV begins its dive to the ocean bottom. There's no guarantee that we'll find the Indianapolis. Still, as expedition leader Curt Newport says: "I just want to get down there and see what we've got."

'A Million Miles Away'
August 21 -- The robotic submarine was supposed to be on the sea floor three days ago, visually searching for the wreck of the USS Indianapolis. Instead it spent most of the weekend on deck.

Looking Into Space
August 25 -- Weather and technical malfunctions sent the team to the Palau archipelago for repairs and a few days' rest. Before retreating, they finally got a glimpse of the ocean floor in the vicinity of where they think the USS Indianapolis rests.

Return to the Deep
August 30 -- After two days in Palau the team returns to the site and the ROV is put in the water-- for eleven minutes. But one last round of repairs allows the team their first thorough search of a promising target.

Hide and Seek
August 31-- The ROV is functioning and on the bottom searching for Indianapolis, giving the team its first look at their target search areas.

Still at Sea
September 1 -- A few hours before midnight, the remotely operated vehicle was hauled on deck and we abandoned our search. The Indianapolis will remain hidden somewhere on the ocean bottom.
