The 21-year-old Armstrong left college in 1862 to join a North Carolina unit. Despite their string of victories, some Confederate soldiers like Capt. Edward Armstrong realized all too well that the Yankees were far from beaten. This letter to his father, written a few weeks after Chancellorsville, reflects his misgivings about the war’s outcome. Armstrong was killed in action the following May. |
