 An officer in the 16th Maine Infantry, Small recalled his unit’s desperate rear-guard fight as they fought to hold back the Rebels after the Federal collapse on July 1. The 16th eventually fell back through Gettysburg but not until suffering 232 casualties out of the 298 men who started the battle. |
