For over two decades, artist Don Troiani has been recognized as one of America’s foremost historical artists. Acclaimed for their accuracy and drama, many of Troiani’s paintings vividly recreate the celebrated, decisive moments of the Civil War. Since the release of his first Civil War prints in 1980, Troiani's reputation has grown steadily. Today his work is in numerous private and public collections, including those of the National Park Service, West Point, the Pentagon and the Smithsonian Institution. To ensure the accuracy of his work, Troiani conducts careful research into the background of each painting, consulting official records and histories as well as letters, diaries and photographs of the participants. He has amassed one of the premier collections of Civil War uniforms, weapons and accoutrements as a resource for the rich, precise details that are a hallmark of his paintings. Over the past several years, Troiani has devoted considerable effort to his Epic of Gettysburg series, a body of paintings that provide an extraordinary visual record of the war's pivotal battle. Featured here are six pieces from the series that bring to life the valor and sacrifice of the soldiers who fought and died during three hot days in July,1863.
