Flight 1 A/R: Zarya (Sunrise)

Launch date: November 20, 1998
Launch vehicle: Russian Proton rocket
Launch complex: Baikonur Cosmodrome

A mighty glamorous name for a 20-ton space tugboat, Zarya means "Sunrise" in Russian. The U.S.-designed, Russian-built module steers, drives and provides basic communications until the Russian Service module arrives to take over. Though fate downgrades her to passageway and fuel storage, Zarya always remains first in the hearts of space-station enthusiasts.
