Flight 4A: Solar panels

Launch date: November 30, 2000
Launch vehicle: Shuttle Endeavour (Shuttle Mission STS-97)
Launch complex: Kennedy Space Center

During two spacewalks, astronauts unroll and connect 100-foot long solar panels. The panels are the first of four sets that combined cover an area the size of an acre. The crew hooks up radiators that provide cooling for the early station and an S-band communications system for voice and data transmission to Mission Control centers.
