Flight 5A: U.S. Laboratory

Launch date: January 2001
Launch vehicle: Shuttle Atlantis (Shuttle Mission STS-98)
Launch complex: Kennedy Space Center

The station's first research laboratory, named "Destiny," arrives. Shuttle astronauts use the ship’s robot arm to maneuver the lab into position, then conduct three spacewalks to finish attaching it to the station. From inside, the station crew begins outfitting the lab with supplies brought up inside the shuttle’s cargo carrier. They also begin testing equipment.
