Over the next six years American space shuttles and Russian rockets will make 45 separate flights to carry pieces of the station into orbit. The mission: to have astronauts assemble over 100 parts never attached on earth; to tactfully coordinate the cooperation of 16 countries; to build a world class orbiting laboratory where no one has built before.
