Early last week police received a call from a Santa Ana, California landlord who detected a strange smell coming from a refrigerator in one of his tenant's apartments. Inside was the body of 50-year-old Ricarda Reyes-Villalobos.

According to the Los Angeles Times, detectives were able to quickly locate the couple that had been renting the garage apartment from the landlord. They identified the body as a relative of theirs that had passed away back in August 2014. The couple had been afraid to report the death to police because of their immigration status.

An autopsy on the body found no signs of trauma but the official cause of death is awaiting a final toxicology report. Once that's complete, the Orange County district attorney's office will decide if criminal charges will be issued.
