UPDATE 3/17/16: Derrick Todd Lee died of natural causes brought on by heart disease, a representative for the West Feliciana Parish Coroner's Office has confirmed to The Advocate. Due to patient privacy laws, Lee's full autopsy report will not be released to the public.

Original story below.

A Louisiana state corrections official has confirmed that convicted murderer Derrick Todd Lee died this morning just before 9 AM. Lee had been transported outside the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola, where he was sitting on death row, to receive medical care at an undisclosed location on Saturday.

Earlier this week, Department of Public Safety and Corrections spokeswoman Pam Laborde was not able to answer any questions about the nature of Lee's condition due to federal and state confidentiality laws. She was also not able to answer questions about how much the state was paying for Lee's treatment.

According to The Advocate, an autopsy will be performed and Lee's remains will be under review by a forensics pathologist.

In October 2004, Derrick Todd Lee was sentenced to death after being convicted of the first-degree murder of Charlotte Murray Pace, a 22-year-old LSU grad student. He was then additionally sentenced to life in prison after being convicted of the second-degree murder of 21-year-old Geralyn Barr DeSoto. Investigators also suspect Lee is responsible for the murders of at least four other women in Louisiana between 1998 and 2003.

In September 2015, lawyers representing Lee argued that he is mentally ill and brain-damaged and therefore cannot be executed. The state Supreme Court rejected the appeal.
