Finding: PLAUSIBLE

Explanation: MythBusters Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage take science so seriously they even put idiomatic expressions to the fact-or-fiction test. In one messy example, the duo put the scatological saying about you-know-what hitting the fan under the MythBusters microscope.

Jamie first cooked up a batch of fake feces with the density, compressibility and stickiness of dog poop and readied a fan. But the small-scale experiment involving spoonfuls of feces tossed at a 12-inch fan only resulted in a lackluster spattering around the room.

However, when the MythBusters took the fake poop full-scale and readied 80 pounds of the stuff to shovel at a 30-inch-diameter, one-quarter horsepower cage fan, the feces really began to fly. Afterward, the fake feces-covered camera crew, Jamie and Adam were filthy, walking proof that when poop hits the proverbial fan, it can plausibly go everywhere.
