A research team spotted 15 great white sharks basking in the ocean off of Aptos, California over the weekend, which isn't an unusual occurrence -- except that one of the sharks measured in at an estimated 18 feet long, according to the airborne researchers.

"It was amazing. I've been on the ocean every chance I can get for the last twenty years, and I've never seen anything like this before," marine biologist Giancarlo Thomae told KSBW in an interview. Thomae snapped impressive photos of the giant shark, which can be seen in KSBW's report.

The sharks were spotted within the vicinity of the S.S. Palo Alto, a World War I-era concrete tanker that was sunk off of the coast of Aptos and now serves as an artificial reef.
