As a teen, Matthew was obsessed with sports, playing baseball, basketball and football until he discovered his passion for water sports. His love for surfing, swimming and water polo landed him a job as a lifeguard, where he was inspired to pursue a career in emergency medicine. Aged just 21, and combined with a deeply held belief that Afghanistan was his generation's moment to serve, he enlisted in the army and became Delta's platoon medic. He treated a number of injuries and dealt with four US soldiers KIA, and one member of the ANA (Afghanistan National Army.)
Since leaving the army, Matthew makes his own surf boards - recently graduating from a School for Wooden Boat Building where he has learnt the art of building traditional wooden boats. He lives in the mountains of the West Coast with his partner and baby daughter.
