Michael Perna grew up in the heart of Florida’s treasure coast as an avid diver and fisherman. He began his historic shipwreck career in the summer of 2000, working on the salvage vessel Virgilona under the guidance of renowned treasure hunter Demostines “Mo” Molinar. Over the next six years Perna developed his skills recovering precious artifacts from 1715 Fleet shipwreck sites. In 2006, the exploration company Blue Water Ventures of Key West, acquired the Virgilona, including Perna, and promoted him to Captain. After a successful season on the treasure coast, Perna was moved to Key West to work on the Santa Margarita shipwreck, conducting magnetometer and side scan sonar surveys, a crucial component in the discovery of millions of dollars’ worth of gold, silver, pearls, and artifacts. In 2012, Perna worked on an expedition in Central America, and through magnetometer survey located a Spanish galleon that dated back to 1631.
