Destination: The Brooks Range, Alaskan Arctic
Expedition: Satellite imagery indicates that Arctic mountain climates are changing faster than any other place on the planet: Vegetation appears to be “greening,” but what vegetation is involved in this transformation? “Pixel Walking” involves using smartphones on month-long expeditions to document geo-located changes. This method was developed by Alaska Pacific University faculty and students in 2020—connecting satellite scenes to on-Earth observations, and is cost-effective in gathering the finest resolution imagery.
